Victims often suffer catastrophic injuries in speeding crashes

Speeding is not only a violation of Louisiana traffic laws, but it can also be dangerous for everyone on the road. The faster a car is going, the greater the force will be if the vehicle collides with another. This often means that the occupants of the vehicles involved could suffer catastrophic injuries — or worse — in the impact.

Police are citing speed as the cause of a crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 on a recent Saturday somewhere around 1:51 a.m. According to preliminary reports, a vehicle occupied by a 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman was struck from behind by another vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle was a 29-year-old man. During the impact, the man in the first vehicle was thrown out of it.

He was alive when emergency medical personnel transported him to a hospital in the New Orleans area. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries sometime later. The woman also survived the crash, but not without suffering severe injuries. Her condition was last reported as being critical. It is not known what injuries, if any, the driver of the second vehicle suffered.

Police took the driver into custody, but did not reveal what charges, if any, are being contemplated in connection with the crash. The family of the deceased man and the woman who suffered catastrophic injuries may file civil actions against the driver believed responsible for the accident. Successfully proving his negligence could result in a Louisiana court entering monetary judgments in favor of the surviving victim and the deceased victim’s family. Proving that the accused man was speeding at the time of the crash could help accomplish that goal.
