The name of the Bonnet Carre Spillway in New Orleans, Louisiana, seemed particularly apt approximately a week ago when a dump truck and an 18-wheeler collided, causing the semi truck’s cargo of frozen fish to spill across Interstate 10.
The collision occurred early on a Friday morning in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 at mile marker 214, on the bridge over the spillway. In order to allow crews to clear the lost cargo from the roadway, authorities closed the eastbound lanes of the interstate for several hours thereafter. By 9:00 a.m., both lanes were clear, and law enforcement reopened them to traffic.
There are very few further details available regarding the accident. It is not known whether either driver received injuries as a result, nor is it known whether either went to the hospital or obtained medical treatment. Authorities have not commented upon the cause of the accident or who was at fault, nor have they issued any statement regarding arrests or citations.
The cargo that the 18-wheeler was carrying consisted of whole frozen fish in boxes, weighing a total of 40,000 pounds. Photos that authorities took at the accident scene depict dozens of smashed boxes, as well as whole fish scattered on the road. It is unclear whether the dump truck was hauling any load.
Apart from personal injury, which can be devastating, truck accidents can also result in economic consequences, such as lost wages. For this reason, it may be helpful for victims of such collisions to consult an attorney in regard to the case.
