Getting a flat tire can be frightening, but when it happens at highway speeds on a busy roadway, it can also be treacherous. Sometimes, a driver is unable to control the vehicle when a tire blows. Far too many Louisiana drivers in this position end up in a fatal accident.
This thought may have flashed through the mind of the driver of a vehicle on Interstate 10 on a recent Friday. The Louisiana State Police report that the vehicle blew a tire. The driver lost control of the vehicle, and it careened across the median.
Unfortunately, there was a vehicle in the opposing lane of travel when the out-of-control vehicle came toward it. The driver of the car in the oncoming lane did not have the time to avoid the collision that occurred. The 66-year-old woman’s car was hit on the driver’s side, which caused her vehicle to roll twice.
She suffered severe injuries and did not survive. The Coroner’s Office pronounced her dead at the scene. The seven occupants of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospitals in the area.
This fatal accident remains under investigation. In the meantime, the family of the deceased driver may opt to file a wrongful death claim against the driver of the other vehicle and any other parties who might bear some responsibility for the crash. If a civil court rules that the woman’s death was due to the negligence of one or more parties, an award of damages may be forthcoming.
