The driver that hit a pedestrian on La. 43 has expressed regret regarding what happened. The pedestrian vs. car accident claimed the life of a 21-year-old man. The driver that hit him, who turned out to be the president of the Livingston Parish School Board, failed to stop at after hitting the young man.
According to the Louisiana State Police, the victim had stopped the vehicle he was driving. As he got out, another vehicle hit both the driver’s side door and the victim. The victim’s passenger and a pedestrian that happened to be in the area drove the victim to the hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel to save his life, his injuries were too severe and he died.
Somehow, the police were able to locate the man they believe to have been driving the vehicle that struck the victim. The Louisiana State Police arrested the man and confiscated his vehicle. Police say his is cooperative even though he refuses to tell them what he was doing in the area at that time of morning. The preliminary investigation has not revealed any impairment on the part of the arrested man.
So far, the school board president has only been charged with hit-and-run. The deceased driver’s family may not believe that is enough for taking the life of their loved one. If that is the case, they do retain the right to file a wrongful death claim against the man. Even though awards in these civil actions are mainly monetary, families also file them in order to achieve a sense of peace and justice in connection with the car accident that stole their family member.
