Cause of fatal accident in Louisiana suspected to be impairment

Despite the amount of information available regarding the dangers of drinking and driving, some Louisiana drivers continue to do so. When people get behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol, they put not only their own life in danger, but also the lives of everyone around them. In fact, police suspect that a drunk driver may have caused a recent fatal accident.

Officials in Louisiana report that the driver suspected of being under the influence was traveling east on Interstate 10. At the same time, another vehicle was heading down the west side of the highway. Around 11 p.m. on a recent Saturday night, the eastbound pickup truck veered into the westbound lanes.

The pickup ended up directly in the path of the westbound SUV, which did not have the time to get out of the out-of-control truck’s path. The two vehicles collided head-on. The driver of the westbound SUV suffered fatal injuries in the crash to which he succumbed at the scene. Reportedly, the driver of the pickup truck was unharmed.

Officers on scene had reason to suspect that the truck driver was impaired and arrested him. A blood sample was taken to determine whether those suspicions were correct. What charges, if any, could be filed against him may hinge on the results of that blood alcohol test.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased driver retains the right to file a wrongful death claim in connection with this fatal accident. The blood test results may be useful in proving negligence on the part of the pickup truck driver. If the family is successful in its claim, the court may consider awarding them damages commonly seen in such cases.
