Any number of things can cause a Louisiana driver to lose control of the vehicle he or she is driving. Impairment, distraction and obstacles in the roadway can all cause a loss of control. If the driver is unable to regain command of the vehicle, a car accident could result.
Investigators with the Louisiana State Police are fairly certain that impairment did not lead a driver to lose control of his vehicle on a recent Friday morning. It was at approximately 9:30 a.m. when something caused the man to lose control of his vehicle. That caused him to careen out of the westbound lanes of Interstate 10, through the median and into the eastbound lanes.
The 22-year-old woman who was driving a Jeep in the eastbound lanes was unable to avoid hitting the out-of-control vehicle. She suffered injuries in the crash that were described as being moderate. The man driving the westbound car suffered severe injuries in the crash to which he succumbed at the scene. Even though alcohol and drugs were not suspected as being a factor in the crash, toxicology samples were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis as part of the investigation. As investigators await the result of those tests, they are attempting to determine what happened.
The woman who survived the car accident might find that information useful in a personal injury claim against the estate of the deceased driver. If the evidence establishes that the other driver was negligent, the court might consider an award of damages. Any restitution received could help with the medical expenses, lost wages and other damages she is incurring in the wake of the accident and could incur in the future.
