A recent accident becomes the 13th deadly crash Louisiana State Police Troop E has investigated so far this year. The 18-year-old man that died increases the death toll to 15 people. Two people also suffered injuries in this fatal accident.
It was around 7:15 p.m. on March 12 when troopers responded to the call regarding the single vehicle accident. The preliminary investigation reveals that the 20-year-old driver of the pickup truck somehow lost control of his vehicle. As a result, it left the roadway where it rolled before slamming into a tree.
The young man suffered fatal injuries in the crash despite the fact that he was properly restrained when authorities found him. It is not yet known if the two injured parties, the driver and a second passenger, were properly restrained as well. They both suffered unspecified moderate injuries. Emergency responders transported both men to area hospitals for treatment. Their current conditions were not reported.
Since the investigation is ongoing, what charges, if any, will be filed against the driver are undetermined. Investigators are awaiting the results of toxicology samples taken in accordance with procedure. No other report regarding the cause of the crash is available at this time.
Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, the family of the deceased passenger and the injured passenger reserve the right to file civil actions in connection with the fatal accident. In order to prevail in such actions, the parties are required to prove the driver was negligent and that his negligence led to the injuries suffered by one passenger and the death of the other. If a Louisiana court is satisfied that the driver was negligent, an award of damages could be made. Any monies recovered could reimburse the parties for the expenses and other damages incurred in this tragic accident.
