Single vehicle crashes are often more of a challenge for law enforcement officers, including those here in Louisiana, since there are often fewer witnesses to help piece together what happened. When this happens, police often turn to the public for help — especially in a fatal accident. Often, a media request for anyone with information to contact the investigating agency will be released.
Such a request was recently reported on behalf of the Louisiana State Police. The agency is investigating a crash that took place on a recent Wednesday afternoon. At approximately 2:40 p.m., the single-car accident took place on Louisiana Highway 1. Troopers are still attempting to ascertain the details of how the crash occurred. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Troop E.
The driver, a 19-year-old man from Cottonport, suffered injuries that were described as moderate. He was taken to a hospital in the area for treatment. His passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Mansura, suffered fatal injuries to which she succumbed at the scene. Police report that she was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.
The factors that led to the crash are important for officials in case they decide to file criminal charges against the driver. Additionally, such information would also be needed in any civil court action for wrongful death filed by the surviving family members of the passenger. If they are able to establish that the driver’s negligent actions led to the woman’s death, the court might consider an award of damages. A monetary judgment could help the family recover the financial losses incurred in the aftermath of this fatal accident.
